Dedicate a seat in one of our theatres

22 September, 2023

Arts Centre Melbourne's heritage State Theatre is set to close for refurbishment from April 2024, for the first time after 40 years of hosting world-class performances. The Australian Ballet will be the last company to perform in the State Theatre before it closes for refurbishment, with final performances taking place during the last week of March 2024. While the State Theatre is closed, the rest of Arts Centre Melbourne remains open – including the Fairfax Studio and the Playhouse in the Theatres Building, Hamer Hall and Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Why does the theatre need to close for refurbishment?

As part of Reimagining Arts Centre Melbourne, we are refurbishing the heritage State Theatre. For the first time, patrons with mobility challenges can choose to sit across all three seating levels and ticketing reserves in the State Theatre. Further changes include:

  • Introducing two new aisles in the Stalls and Circle to support access for patrons
  • New lifts so that patrons with mobility challenges can easily move from the foyers to their seats
  • New seats, flooring and amenity treatments to improve the comfort of our audiences.

When will the State Theatre reopen?

The Australian Ballet and Opera Australia performance seasons will recommence in the State Theatre in 2027.

Where can I see shows when it is closed?

Resident companies The Australian Ballet and Opera Australia have been offered performance dates at The Regent Theatre as an alternative while the theatre is closed. They will return to the State Theatre for their 2027 performance seasons.

Arts Centre Melbourne remains open throughout the works and you can continue to enjoy performances and events in the Fairfax Studio, the Playhouse, Hamer Hall and Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
